Reflecting on an Empowering Black History Month Panel with the National Society of Black Women in Medicine

I recently had the privilege of serving as a panelist for "Her Health, Her Legacy: Black Women Leading in Medicine," an event hosted by the National Society of Black Women in Medicine (NSBWM) Savannah State University Chapter on February 27, 2025. This panel brought together a distinguished group of Black women in healthcare to discuss our experiences, challenges, and insights with students and aspiring medical professionals.

Key Discussions from the Panel

The Rewards of Medicine and Care – Panelists shared the profound impact of their work and the fulfillment that comes from serving communities through healthcare and wellness.

Work-Life Balance in Medicine - The discussion highlighted strategies for maintaining balance in demanding careers, emphasizing the importance of setting boundaries, practicing self-care, and ensuring long-term sustainability in the field.

Sustainability and Mentorship – Recognizing the unique challenges Black women face in healthcare, we explored best practices for longevity in our professions, including mentorship, advocacy, and continued education.

An Inspiring Community of Healthcare Professionals

I was honored to share this space with accomplished professionals, including:

Dr. Janelle Brown, PT, DPT – Founder & CEO of Oshun Health and Wellness

Dr. Ashlie A. Booth, MD – Owner of Healing Beyond the Stethoscope Primary Care

Dr. Keisha Reddick, MD – OB/GYN Maternal-Fetal Medicine Physician

Dr. Jamessa Cummings, PharmD, MMHC – Assistant Professor at South University

Dr. Diamond Rashad, OTD, OTR/L – Occupational Therapist specializing in neurodevelopmental and neurological disorders

The discussion provided a meaningful opportunity to engage with students, offering insights into navigating careers in healthcare while remaining committed to personal and professional well-being.

Continuing the Conversation

This event reinforced the importance of creating spaces where Black women in healthcare can connect, support one another, and inspire the next generation of professionals. I look forward to continuing these conversations and advocating for greater representation and accessibility in healthcare.
